The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) works to provide a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public in New Mexico. The Multimodal Planning and Programs Bureau is part of the Planning Division and is focused on providing multimodal transportation planning services for the Department, as well as managing several federal funding programs, and coordinating with governmental agencies around New Mexico.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?

This position is a Senior Transportation Planner within the NMDOT's Multimodal Planning and Programs Bureau. Duties include serving as the Planning Liaison to Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) and Regional Transportation Planning Organizations (RTPOs), program and project management, assisting the Bureau with the development and implementation of multimodal transportation plans, and other duties as assigned.

How does it get done?

The Senior Transportation Planner works closely with the Metropolitan and Regional Transportation Planning Organizations, including traveling to and attending the Organizations' meetings, coordinating with the Organizations' member entities on transportation projects and related opportunities, monitoring the Organizations' work products and operations, processing the Organizations' reimbursement packets, and ensuring the Organizations' compliance with state and federal requirements. This position also assists with the development, implementation and administration of multimodal transportation plans, programs and projects. Lastly, this position provides other transportation planning services and expertise as needed by the Department.

Who are the customers?

The position serves the Metropolitan Planning Organizations and their member entities, Regional Transportation Planning Organizations and their member entities, members of the public, as well as other NMDOT staff in the General Office (GO) and Districts.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following:

* Masters Degree in Transportation, Community, Urban or Regional Planning or a closely allied field, such as Public Administration, Public Policy, Public Health, Political Science or Geography.
* Previous positions as a Planner, Program Administrator or Policy Analyst for a governmental entity.
* Managing federal grants and familiarity with the requirements contained in 2 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 200.
* Transportation planning.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in planning, architecture, business administration, public administration, or political science and one (1) year of experience to include urban transportation or infrastructure planning, real estate, commercial or public land usage, grant management, procurement, working with contracts, right of way appraisal, inter-agency coordination, engineering design, business administration, and/or economics. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a general office setting with frequent travel within New Mexico, and some out of state and/or overnight travel, required via a Department vehicle. The office setting includes use of visual/video display terminal (VDT) and extensive computer and telephone usage with possible extended periods of sitting. Some standing, bending and reaching may be required.
