Planning Manager, Fort Collins Colorado

Larimer County Community Development Department is seeking an experienced and skilled individual to join our team and grow his or her career as a Planning Manager

Larimer County has a population of approximately 350,000 people encompassing 2,600 square miles of rural landscapes, mountains, and urban settings along the vibrant and growing North Front Range of Colorado.  The region consistently has been recognized as a great place to be and an innovative place to work, live, and play.  The County includes eight incorporated municipalities with the largest, Fort Collins as the county seat and home to Colorado State University.  The Larimer County organization is high performing with three County Commissioners supported by a County Manager guiding the County’s work plan and priorities.

The ideal candidate will have the technical and personal skills to perform and oversee the most complex professional planning work; coordinate planning activities and analyze and make recommendations using the Land Use Code; collaboratively work with the Department’s other supervisors and teams to define and implement work plan goals for the department; manage the development review program; and provide supervision and mentoring for a team of Planners.  Additionally, the ideal candidate will assist the Community Development Director in providing staff support to the Board of County Commissioners, the Planning Commission, the Board of Adjustment, and other boards as assigned.  Finally, the individual in this position will uphold the County’s Vision and Guiding Principles, setting that bar for the Planning team to support improved processes (including moving toward electronic plan review), innovation, and quality customer service. 

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelors Degree in Planning or related field from an accredited college or university required. Master's Degree in Urban Planning or related field preferred.

  • Eight (8) years of increasingly responsible and relevant Land Use Planning experience in a local government environment, including supervisory responsibilities required.  Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Urban Planning or a related field may substitute for two years of the required experience. Private sector experience also may count toward the experience requirement if relevant.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification from the American institute of Certified Planners (AICP) within 1 year of hire.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Driver’s License.

  • Completion of Systematic Development of Informed Consent (SDIC) training is preferred.
