Other Conditions: To begin August 1, 2019, subject to position clearance and availability of funds. We seek interested and highly qualified applicants whose research and teaching expertise/interests are in the area of community planning.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develop a research agenda that emphasizes one or more of the following areas to strengthen DURP’s community planning stream: collaborative governance and multicultural societies, indigenous planning, alternative planning epistemologies, sustainable island planning, community ­based economic development, community resilience;

  2. teach courses in the master’s curriculum and contribute to undergraduate and Ph.D. curriculum development; supervise and mentor students

  3. seek extramural funding

  4. provide service to the department, college, and the university

  5. engage with communities in Hawai‘i and the broader Asia Pacific region to advance community ­based planning. Other duties as assigned by the chair.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in urban planning or a closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing or foreign equivalent.

  • ABDs will be considered as long as all degree requirements are met before August 1, 2019.

  • ABDs must also submit a letter from their committee chair attesting that dissertation and all degree requirements will be completed prior to the date of hire.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct community engaged scholarship with particular emphasis on culturally appropriate community planning/development.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach and mentor students.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues, community organizations, and policymakers in cooperative, cross­cultural, interdisciplinary endeavors;

  • Demonstrated ability to generate extramural funding;

  • Interested in comparative planning and research in the Pacific Islands, Oceania, or the AsiaPacific region, more broadly;

  • Knowledgeable about the political and social dimensions, cultural norms and values, histories, and traditional knowledges/worldviews of the region(s) studied.
