December 2011 The Western Planner
Call for Papers for the 2012 Conference - The 2012 Western Planner Conference will be held in Billings, Montana, August 7-10. The conference theme falls under the category of what’s old is new again. “The New Old Frontier” acknowledges that current resource development, urban renewal, and emergence of multimodal transportation options have roots in historic activities characteristic of the Old West. Yet even though these modern counterparts have had historic models and examples, the impacts are still very challenging and frustratingly unpredictable. With the same pioneering spirit that settled the West, planners are leaning into the challenges by examining the planning implications of three prevailing issues: the effect of booming resource extraction and renewable and non-renewable energy development on rural communities, urban revitalization and infill development, and transportation choices. Speakers are invited and encouraged to present on any of these subjects. Please email potential presentation topics and indicate whether the session is a single-speaker or panel-style format to Wyeth Friday, fridayw@ci.billings.mt.us with the subject line 2012 WPR Call for Papers. The email should include a brief description of the presentations and the name and contact information of the presenter. The deadline for presentation submittal is February 17, 2012.
